CRISOSTOMO VIGIL
The Mass of Christian Burial for Crisostomo Vigil, a long time resident of Villanueva, NM and who passed away on Thursday at Alta Vista Regional Hospital, was celebrated this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva with Father John McKenna celebrating the Mass. The interment followed in Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Villanueva with the following serving as casket bearers: Jeffrey Vigil, Christopher Encinias, Patrick Gallegos, Alias Vigil, Michael Lucero, and Mike Chavez. All of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, god children and his hijados served as honorary casket bearers. An honor guard from the United States Army provided the military honors at the cemetery. H. Felix Vigil and Jack Lanstra delivered the eulogies.He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Josefina Vigil; his mother and father-in-law, Luis and Melecia Ortiz; his daughters, Marie and Rosaleen; a great-granddaughter, Jennifer, and two sisters, Guadalupe and Ignacita and a son-in-law, Albert Gallegos.He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Adelaida Ortiz Vigil; four sons, Felix vigil and wife Toni of Villanueva, NM and their son, Michael; George Vigil and wife Katherine of Los Alamos and their children, Jeffrey and wife Kathleen and Janni and companion Dawn; Steve Vigil and wife Roseanne of Denver, CO and their children Alias, Vanessa and Rachel; and Leroy Vigil and wife Jacaranda of Mexia, TX and children Elisa and Bianca; four daughters, Josephine Gallegos of Albuquerque and children Christina, Angela, and Billy; Palmyra Gallegos and husband Delfido of La Fragua and children Catherine, Martha, and Maria Elena, and Patrick; Annabelle Encinias and husband Larry of Villanueva and their son Christopher; and Joyce Chavez and husband Mike of Peralta, NM and their children Esperanza and Amor; and by ten great-granddaughters.
Mr. Vigil was born in El Cerrito, NM on June 19, 1917 to Ramon and Josefina Vigil. He grew up in El Cerrito helping his widowed sisters and his blind father. At the age of 17 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and worked on many WPA projects. On July 29, 1939 he married Adelaida Ortiz of Villanueva. After a short stay in El Cerrito, he moved his family to Villanueva. He also lived and worked in Lordsburg, Las Vegas, NM, Pueblo and Greeley, Colorado. Prior to the war, he worked at the shipyards on the west coast of Washington and California. He honorably served in the United States Army as a soldier in the South Pacific during World War II in the Philippines and during the Korean Conflict. Crisostomo devoted his life to constantly serving his family, his country, his state, his county, his community, and his church, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Villanueva where he attended daily services. He raised four sons and six daughters. He was a active leader in government, church and community endeavors to include: Acequia and Atarque Comisionado, Sheriffs Posse member, and mentor to many other community organizations. He also served as a San Miguel County County Commissioner, Deputy Sheriff and Probate Judge. Also, Chris was a dedicated rancher and farmer. In his church activities, he served as a eucharistic minister, mass server, and a cursillista. He had a deep devotion to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel since childhood. His talents included self-taught home builder, carpenter, cabinet maker, electrician, adobe layer, stone mason, mechanic and even a goat and cattle rancher. He was also a school bus driver and a successful business man. In light of all his milestones he accomplished, he was best known as a humorous light-hearted optimist who never passed up telling a joke. Arrangements were under the direction of Billy G.
