Roberto "Bobby" Garcia, 86, a resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2017 in the presence of his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Guadalupe Garcia; his mother, Carmen Gomez and his step-father, Crescencio Gomez. He is survived by two daughters: Teresa Gallegos and husband Joseph of Las Vegas, NM and Isabel Garcia of Albuquerque, NM; one son, Robert Aragon and wife Lizzie of Las Vegas, NM; a niece, Rita Lucero raised as his daughter and husband Frank; a sister, Isabel Padilla of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren: Guadalupe, Joseph, Joshua, Melanie, Geronimo, Angelita, Roberto, Marco, Robert and 14 great-grandchildren and his longtime companion, Tina Marquez of Las Vegas, NM.
He was born in La Liendre, NM on January 6, 1931. Bobby was well known for his dedication to Las Vegas, NM; his joyful laughter, willingness to lend a helping hand, ready to tell a joke t any time, passion for music, visiting with friends and the Special Olympics and Senior Olympics. He was active in bowling, ping pong, and a long time facilitator at the local bingo. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on January 12, 1949 and was a highly decorated Korean War Veteran for his bravery and sacrifices serving his country. He was a recipient of two Purple Hearts, four Bronze Star Medals, the Occupation of Japan Medal, the Distinguished Unit emblem, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Korean Service Medal. He took great pride in being at veteran and was proud of his community. He was a member of American Legion Post #24, and the San Juan Argonne Post 1547 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Chapter 17 of the Disabled American Veterans.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church with a rosary on Monday, June 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Father George V. Salazar will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. The interment will be on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. with full military honors in the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Wound Warrior Project, Inc, 4899 Belfort Road Ste 300, Jacksonville, Fl. 322560-6033 which can be found on the funeral home website, www.gonzalesfunerals.com.
