Ben Johnny Gutierrez, 44, a resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2910 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Gutierrez; his maternal grandparents, Juan and Josefita Gutierrez; his paternal grandfather, Juan Gutierrez; three uncles: Joe, Ernie, and Reggie Gutierrez; and aunt, Maggie Gutierrez, and his padrino Edwardo Quintana.
He is survived by one son, Ben Isaac Gutierrez of Las Vegas, NM; his mother, Elvie Gutierrez and Lorenzo Montoya; the mother of his child, Sarah Marie Sandoval of Las Vegas, NM; two sisters, Darlene Gutierrez of Albuquerque, NM and Linda Gutierrez and companion Marvin Sena of Las Vegas, NM; his paternal grandmother, Victoria Gutierrez of Las Vegas, NM; ten uncles: Eddie and Freddy Gutierrez and Joe Portillo all of Las Vegas, NM, Steve and Dennis Gutierrez both of Albuquerque, NM, Nick (Theresa) Portillo of Mesa, AZ, Johnny (Fermie) Gutierrez, Manuel (Mary Ann) Gutierrez, Max (Angie) Gutierrez, and Chris (Ida) Gutierrez all of Pueblo, CO; seven aunts: Mary Gutierrez of Las Vegas, NM, Cindy Gutierrez, Helen Gutierrez, Mary (Mel)Valenzuela, Ruby (Tony) Flores, Jesusita Quintana, and Juanita (Ron) Frazier all of Albuquerque, NM, a nephew, Harley Sena ( Naomi) of Las Vegas, NM; great nephew Mickael, numerous cousins and friends, and half siblings, Brian and Valerie
He was educated here in Las Vegas, NM and enlisted in the United States Army and was in Desert Storm as a motor transport operator with the 720th Transportation Company of the New Mexico National Guard. He received the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one bronze service star. He was honorably discharged from active duty on August 6, 1991 at Ft. Bliss, TX with the rank of specialist fourth class. He was a newspaper carrier for the Las Vegas Optic and the Santa Fe New Mexican. He did odd jobs doing construction, and working at the Las Vegas Medical Center both as a custodian and a psychiatric technician. He operated a boarding home for men and worked at the Plaza Hotel and for Victory Home Health Care. He was a member of San Juan Argonne Post #1547 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His hobbies included riding his Harley, making models of motor cycles. He enjoyed camping and his dirt bike.
Services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church beginning with a rosary on Friday evening, November 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning, November 20, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. The interment will follow on Monday in the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m.
