Corina S. Duran, 90, a life long resident of Las Vegas, NM and more recently of Rio Rancho, NM, passed away on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Lovelace-Sandia Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adelaido and Jacinta Sandoval Rivera; a sister, Mary Marquez and her husband David; her first husband, Jacobo Rael Sr and second husband, Jose A. Duran; a grandson, Jeffrey Martinez; and nephews Jerry and Robert Marquez. She is survived by one son, Jacobo Rael and wife Rose of Las Vegas, NM; four daughters, Gloria Rider of Denver, CO, Sylvia Almanza of Aurora, CO, Joan Grace Duran-Kuck and husband Lyle of Rio Rancho, NM, and an adopted daughter and son, Beverly Aranda of Rio Rancho, NM and Jesse Vigil of Las Vegas, NM; as well as all of her adopted children around the world; five grandchildren: Eugene Martinez and wife Mary of Denver, CO, Sharon Martinez of Westminister, CO, Deanne Gleason and husband Bill of Aurora, CO; Gilbert Almanza and wife Barbara of West Lafayette, IN, Patty Potts of Aurora, CO; and by six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren as well as a nephew Henry Marquez, and a niece, Jean Marquez.
Corina was born in Las Vegas, NM on May 2, 1921 and resided there most of her life. She was a long time LPN, working for many years serving the medical patients of Northern New Mexico. She worked at the original St. Anthony's Hospital, the Las Vegas Hospital, and the New Mexico State Hospital before retiring in 1984. She was involved in many community organizations, which include The Ladies Auxiliary of both the Disabled American Veterans and VFW Post #1547, and the Immaculate Conception Church Altar Society. She enjoyed most of all her family and her pets, gardening, basket weaving, reading, and crafts of all kinds. Corina always said, "Give me my flowers while I am alive"; in lieu of flowers, the family as requested that contributions should be made to the Disable American Veterans Association.
A visitation will be held on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations. All services will be held from the Immaculate Conception Church with a rosary Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. Father George V. Salazar will celebrate the Mass. Cremation will follow the services and the interment will take place at a later date in the San Jose Cemetery.
