Cristobal D. Trujillo, 75, a resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away at his home following a brief illness. He is survived by two sons: Michael Gallegos and wife Rhonda of La Jolla, CA, and Timothy Trujillo and wife Annie of Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Tanya Marie Trujillo and husband Richard Siemer of Washington, DC; a brother, Adam Trujillo and wife Pauline of Albuquerque, NM; one sister, Maria Vigil and husband Anthony of Albuquerque, NM; and by four grandchildren.
He was a native New Mexican born in Terromote, NM on June 22, 1935. His parents were Secundino and Guadalupe Trujillo. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows Elementary School and the West Las Vegas Christian Brothers High School. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1952. He later obtained a B. A. In Science and Physical Education with Math and Secondary Education minors at New Mexico Highlands University in 1956. During his four years at Highlands, he lettered in basketball and baseball. After obtaining his B. A. Degree he worked with the U. S. Public Health Service in New York City for two years and in New Mexico for an additional year, as an interviewer and investigator. He served his country in the U S Army Chemical Corps for two years as the Assistant Chief of Biological Warfare at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. Afterward, he worked for five years with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration as an Inspector/Agent covering five states from the Denver Central Office. He was involved in inspecting foods, drugs, cosmetics, and narcotics violations. He then returned to Las Vegas, NM to work as Director of the Sangre de Cristo Community Action Program covering San Miguel, Mora, and Colfax counties.
Between 1975 and 1980 Mr. Trujillo served in the State Department of Education as Director of the Civil Rights Unit. Later, he served as the Assistant Director of the Chapter 1 and Title 1 Programs, inspecting and certifying school districts. He was also involved in the evaluation of educational programs at these districts for the purpose of State accreditation and compliance with federal regulations.
While working for New Mexico Highlands University as an instructor, he completed his Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration and obtained post-graduate certifications in Bilingual Education and Science. He instructed in the areas of bilingual, early childhood, science, school-community relations, and micro teaching. He also administered supplementary training programs for 250 teacher assistants and a Latin American Administrators Program in Education Administration. Mr. Trujillo had served in various capacities of the SER-Jobs for Progress, Inc. Board of Directors since 1975.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from Our Lady of Sorrows Church at 9:00 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. Eulogies will be delivered prior to the Mass beginning at 8:30 a.m. The interment will follow in the San Isidro Cemetery in Manuelitas, NM. Members of San Juan-Argonne Post #1547 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will perform the military honors at the grave site. The family has requested memorials be made to the Cristobal D. Trujillo Memorial Fund and sent to SER-Jobs for Progress, 2516 Cerrillos Road, Santa Fe, NM 87505 in care of Alex A. Martinez.
