Dr. Frederick Lynn Yarger

Dr. Frederick Lynn Yarger, 83, of Las Vegas, NM, passed away June 3, 2008, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born March 8, 1925, in Lindsey, OH, to Burdena and Sherman Yarger - the fifth of six children. He enlisted in the US Navy after high school during World War II, serving as an electronics technician. Dr. Yarger left the service to attend college at Capital University in Bexley, OH, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. It was there that he met and married Mary Petersen of Mt. Healthy, OH. Following college, Dr. Yarger moved to Los Alamos, NM, where he worked as a technician for Los Alamos National Laboratory. After working in Los Alamos for several years, he returned to graduate school, receiving his Ph.D. in 1960 from the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Dr. Yarger worked at the National Bureau of Standards and the Nevada Test Site before accepting a faculty position in 1966 at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, teaching in the Physics and Mathematics Department. Dr. Yarger retired from Highlands University in 1992. Dr. Yarger was active in church and community affairs in Las Vegas. He helped establish Peace Lutheran Church and served many years as a volunteer firefighter, including as chief of East Las Vegas Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995. In 2000, Dr. Yarger met Fran Lisenbee of Las Vegas. With her he shared much love and joy during the remaining years of his life. He is survived by Fran Lisenbee of Las Vegas; his son Frederick and his wife Kathy of Socorro, NM ; his son Peter and his wife Marisa of Jamison, PA; two sisters, Helen Stalter of Upper Sandusky, OH, and Catherine Messersmith of Rio Rancho, NM; and four grandchildren. A memorial service and internment will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Friday, June 20, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair, 801 Long Place, Socorro, NM 87801 or to the Northeastern New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair, c/o New Mexico Highlands University, Columbia Suite #102, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
