ERNEST PATRICIO "BROWNIE" MONTANO

Ernest Patricio "Brownie" Montano went home to our Lord on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised him, Hilario Montano and Teresa Sacoman Montano, maternal grandmother Elvira Padilla Kelly ; parents Horacio R. Montano and Maria Padilla Montano; a brother Leroy Montano; and a sister, Lucille R. Romero.He is survived by one daughter, Joselle DeMarco-Chandler and husband Jim and grandchildren Karliz and Kape-Thomas of Las Vegas, NM; one son, Ernie Montano and grandson Trystyn Ty of Las Vegas; a step-daughter Angel Gutierrez and step-granddaughter Preciosa America of Las Vegas; a brother-in-law who he raised, Tom Crespin and wife Vickie of Las Vegas; the mother of his children, Margie Seay-Maez of Las Vegas; four sisters: Sylvia Montoya, Brenda Rogers and husband Billy all of Las Vegas, Anna Montano and husband Mark and Sally Ulibarri and husband Rafael all of Clovis, NM; four brothers, Albert Montano of Denver, CO, Eldon Montano of Phoenix, AZ, Anthony Montano and wife Theresa of Rio Rancho, NM, and Dennis Sandy of Las Vegas, NM; god-children, Michael Crespin of Albuquerque, NM and Mark Arguello of Las Vegas, NV. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.He was born here in Las Vegas on June 26, 1938 and was a graduate of West Las Vegas School and received his BA and MA degrees at New Mexico Highlands University. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army on April 30, 1962 as a SP4 after having served during the Berlin Crisis in Germany. He was an educator, being one of the founding fathers of the Adult Basic Education (GED) program at Luna Vocational Technical Institute, now Luna Community College. He taught English as a second language (ESL) at West Las Vegas and at Luna Community College for eight years. He was a law enforcement officer for the Town of Las Vegas and also a deputy for the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, San Juan Argonne Forest Post 1547 here in Las Vegas and a member of the National Education Association. He enjoyed reading and hunting as his hobbies. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.As per his wishes he was cremated and a rosary will be recited on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. from St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. The Mass of Christian Burials will celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors. Serving as honorary pall bearers are Tom Crespin, Archie Martinez, Dennis Sandy, Edward Arguello, and grandsons Kape-Thomas DeMarco-Masopust and Trystyn Ty Montano.
