Frank Montenegro, Jr., 60, a well-known and respected educator died peacefully Monday morning following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father Frank and brother John Paul. He is survived by his wife Lora and mother Mary, both of Las Vegas, son Pablo and girlfriend Angelic Gold of Chama, son Fernando and girlfriend Sandi Schwarz of Santa Fe, daughter Andrea and husband Phillip Trujillo of Santa Fe, and one grandson Oscar Trujillo. Nieces Julianna and husband Leon Ortega, of Las Vegas , Anita and husband Marvin MacAuley of Penasco. Brother in Laws Pula and wife Stefanie Martinez of Albuquerque, Dennis and wife Sheila Martinez of Chimayo, sister in law Lucille and husband Eduardo Holguin of Chimayo, nieces Yvonne Williams and Kathyern Martinez of Albuquerque, Ivy Martinez of Chimayo, Annette and husband Donavan Curley of Rio Rancho. Great nephews Santiago Ortega, Julian Martinez , great-nieces Dominique Ortega, Ariana, Maricela, and Analise, MacAuley , Adrianna Williams and Alyssa Curley.
Frank was raised in Las Vegas and attended West Las Vegas Schools. He was a renown athlete excelling in football, basketball, baseball and academics. He graduated class valedictorian in 1967 and continued his athletic and academic excellence at New Mexico Highlands University. He played basketball and baseball for Highlands and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He also obtained a Master of Arts in Administration from NMHU. He began his career at the West Las Vegas Schools in Math Education and coaching of track and basketball. He went on to become and administrator for the elementary, middle school and high school. He retired as the Assistant Superintendant of West Las Vegas schools. He worked for the San Miguel County District Attorney's office before retiring completely to enjoy his favorite hobby, hunting. He began a great love of the outdoors as a small child, hunting and fishing with his father and cousins. He passed on the skill and love of this sport to his sons, cousins, nephews and friends.
Frank was a dedicated husband, son, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and mentor. He influenced many lives at home and at work. He will be remembered for his great talent as an athlete, leadership in education, and great love and support for his family.
Cremation has already taken place and all services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary on Thursday, Oct 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Friday Oct 30 at 9 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to New Mexico Highlands University Foundation, Box 9000, Las Vegas, NM 87701 for a scholarship for a West Las Vegas High School student wishing to attend NMHU.
