Gilbert E. Saavedra

Gilbert E. Saavedra, 81, a life long resident of Grants, New Mexico, passed away on New Year's Day in Las Vegas, New Mexico following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Helen Marquez of Grants, NM; one daughter, Debra Godfrey of Rio Rancho, NM; a step-daughter, Sylvia Pando and husband Louie of Mora, NM; three grandchildren: Stacey Godfrey and Jonathan Godfrey and wife Michelle all of Rio Rancho, NM, and Jasmine Pando and companion Diego Coca of Las Vegas, NM; a great-granddaughter, Natalya Godfrey of Rio Rancho, NM; three sisters: Lydia Dominguez and husband Sam of Grants, NM, Alvina Blea of Bernalillo, NM, and Mae Crews of McAlister, OK; one brother, Pat W.and wife Prudence Saavedra of Milan, NM; and a brother-in-law, Eddie Marquez of Las Vegas, NM.
Mr. Saavedra was born in Grants, NM on September 28, 1928 to the late Luis and Teresita Martinez Saavedra. He married Helen Marquez in Grants, NM on April 21, 2003. He was a warehouse supervisor for the City of Grants, NM for 25 years and was a member of B. P. O. Elks Grants-Milan Lodge #2053, and was the main chef at the Elks Club in Grants for 30 years. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge, the Milan Lions Club and was a collector of knives and lighters.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at St. Theresa's Church in Grants, NM with a rosary on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow.
