Helen G. Gallegos, 65, a retired school teacher and educator passed away on Saturday at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio A. and Agneda Lucero Gallegos and her brother, Adan Gallegos.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen D. Gonzales and husband Roy of Albuquerque, NM; two sons: Ernest J. Gallegos of Amarillo, TX and Walter D. Gallegos and wife Sue Anne of Moriarty, NM; her companion, Claudio Baca of Las Vegas, NM; three sisters: Theresa Padilla of Albuquerque, NM, Agnes Salazar and husband Pete of Moriarty, NM, and Fannie Marczyk of Phoenix, AZ; four brothers: Luciano Gallegos and wife Stella of Los Lunas, NM, Tudy Gallegos and Gabriel Gallegos and companion Sophie all of Sena, NM, and Ray Lucero of Albuquerque, NM; six grandchildren: Daniel R. and Fabian L. Gonzales, Karla C., Angel K., Marissa J., and Isabella A. Gallegos; five great-grandchildren: Mariah, Alianna, Fabian Jr., Havanna, and Daniel; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was born in Sena, New Mexico on December 31, 1943. She graduated from West Las Vegas High School and received her BA and Ma Degrees from New Mexico Highlands University. She began her teaching career in Villanueva, NM then on to Robertson High School as a teacher and school counselor. She also taught school in the Santa Rosa Consolidated School District, Paul D. Henry Elementary, and was a counselor at Luna Community College. She was a member of the National Education Association, and the New Mexico Education Association. A life long catholic, she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva, NM. She loved to dance and on occasion sang with the Reina de Los Cielos Choir. She enjoyed sewing and arts and crafts and spent time with her great-grandchildren.
Cremation has already taken place and a rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church. Another rosary will be recited on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva, NM. The interment will follow in the Nuestro Senor de Esquipula Cemetery in Sena, New Mexico.
