Joe A. Mascareñas, 63, a resident of Canon de Las Manuelitas, NM, passed away at his residence on Saturday, July 11, 2009 following a prolonged illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Secundino and Grace Mascareñas; a brother, Richard Mascarñas; a granddaughter, Selina Larrañaga; a special god daughter, April Garduno, and a special uncle, Benjamin Mascareñas
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Isabel Chavela Mascareñas of the family home; two daughters, Monica Stroud and husband Sam of Las Vegas, NM and Angelica Larrañaga and husband Alex of Canon de Las Manuelitas, NM; one brother, Epimenio Mascareñas and wife Connie of Las Vegas, NM; two sisters: Della Urioste and husband Lupe and Aggie Jaramillo and husband Mike all of Las Vegas, NM; four grandchildren: Aaron, Megan, & Cory Stroud, and Shania Larrañaga all of Las Vegas, NM; a special nephew, Les Urioste and wife Heather of Las Vegas, NM; a special niece, Deanna Urioste and companion, Danny Downs of Las Vegas, NM; a mother-in-law, Secundina Urioste of Las Vegas, NM; two brothers-in-law, Delfie Urioste and Gene Urioste both of Las Vegas, NM; four sisters-in-law, Rose Atencio and husband Louie, Connie Chavez and husband Milnor, Josie Sisneros and husband Armando all of Las Vegas, NM, and Barbara Jones and husband Norman of Houston, TX; his madrina, Adelina Mascareñas of Castro Valley, CA; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and god children.
Joe graduated from Robertson High School and attended Luna Community College. On October 23, 1965 he was united in marriage to Isabel Chavela Urioste at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas, NM. In his early life he was a housekeeping maintenance supervisor at New Mexico Highlands University, and worked at the Rehab Center. For over 20 years he worked at Price's Ilfeld Hardware & Furniture. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the E. Romero Hose & Fire Company, and his hobbies were horseback riding, hunting, four-wheeling, hiking, and was a welder on the side.
Cremation has taken place and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Sapello, New Mexico.
