Joe Yara, 85, a resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away at Vida Encantada Nursing and Rehab Center on Thursday following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tranquilino and Estella Yara; his daughter, JoAnn; a son, David; four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucinda Yara of the family home; four daughters, Beatrice Gold and husband Orlando of Las Vegas, NM, Linda Padilla and husband Jerry of Albuquerque, NM, Florinda Yara of San Diego, CA, and Elizabeth Crespin and husband Carlos of Las Vegas, NM; six sons: Joe Yara Jr. And wife Carmen of Las Vegas, NM, Robert Yara and wife Ida of Oklahoma City, OK, John Yara and wife Tamara of Las Vegas, NM, Abel Yara and wife Sonya of Bernalillo, NM, Tommy Yara of Las Vegas, NM, and Ronnie Yara and wife Christina of Phoenix, AZ; three sisters: Rita Duran of Bakersfield, CA, Mary Chavez and husband Teofilo of Tecolote, NM, and Jenny Lopez and husband Armando of Las Vegas, NM; a son-in-law, Alex Vigil Sr. of Albuquerque, NM; 40 grandchildren, and 52 great-grandchildren.
He was born in Trujillo, NM on September 18, 1925 to Tranquilino and Estella Yara. He was a lifelong cowboy and an avid horse lover and camper and spending time with his family at the ranch. A World War II Veteran, he served two enlistments in the United States Army. He was with the Headquarters Company 3rd Battalion 23rd Infantry and later on the 114th Infantry and
was in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He returned from Govrock, Scotland on the HMS Queen Elizabeth and in 1945 he reenlisted to serve with the 37th Constabulary Squadron. He was awarded the E. A. M. E. T. Ribbon, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Army Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He then returned to serve with the San Miguel County Sheriff's Posse for two years and was a sign crew member of the New Mexico Highway Department for 25 years prior to his retirement.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Monday with a rosary at 12:00 noon followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in the San Isidro Cemetery in Trujillo, NM. Memorials may be made to the Heating and Air Conditioning Fund at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 403 Valencia, Las Vegas, NM.
