Laura Lucero, 78, a resident of Buena Vista, NM passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Colorado Springs, CO on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 after a lengthy illness. By her side was her loving daughter, Patricia who was also her caregiver; her son, Larry; and special granddaughter June Martinez. She was born on November 2, 1932 in El Carmen, NM. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Perfecto and Tonita Valerio; parents, Antonio and Filomena Esquibel; a daughter, Dolores Martinez; a grandson, Ronald Martinez; a sister Alice Martinez, and a nephew Frankie Esquibel.
She is survived by her husband, Ignacio V. Lucero of Buena Vista, NM; a daughter, Patricia C. Martinez and a special family friend Panchito of Colorado Springs, CO; sons: Johnny Martinez and wife Ruby and family of Mora, NM, Larry Martinez and wife Henrietta and family of Las Vegas, NM; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; brothers: Thomas Esquibel and wife Eufelia and family of Cheyenne, WY, Victor Esquibel and wife Della and family and Frank Esquibel and family of Buena Vista, NM; sisters: Clara Pacheco and family of Raton, NM and Josie Herrera and husband Lorenzo and family of Guadalupita, NM; a special cousin, Jim Esquibel and family of San Diego, CA. She is also survived by numerous special nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
She worked at the New Mexico Human Services Department for 28 years from where she retired. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with her family. Services will be held at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Mora, NM with a rosary on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., November 19, 2010 and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010. Father James Sanchez will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow at the Nuestro Padre Jesus Cemetery in El Carmen, NM. with the following serving as casket bearers: Julius (J.G.) Padilla, Steve Martinez, Ponchito Escamillo, Jake Cordova, Paul Marftinez, and Melvin Herrera. Honorary bearers will be Johnny and Larry Martinez, Victor and Frank Esquibel, Maftin Romero, and Johnny Martinez Jr.
