Leroy A. Barela, 65, a resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Sunday following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramon and Estella Romero Barela; his wife Mary Helen Barela; four brothers: Reyes Barela and wife Corine, Gilbert, Raymond, and Danny Barela; a sister-in-law, Patsy; a nephew, Robert Barela; an in-law, Joe Gallegos; his mother-in-law, Katie Roybal; and two sisters-in-law, Theresa Montano and Vickie Roybal.
He is survived by two daughters: Judy Lozano and companion Dennis of North Hollywood, CA and Theresa (Reyna) Barela and companion Shane Graston of Las Vegas, NM; five sons: Ronnie Barela and companion Kristin of Las Vegas, NM, Leroy Barela Jr. And wife Julieann of Villanueva, NM, Arturo, Paul and wife Angela, and David Barela and companion Karlene Padilla all of Las Vegas, NM; a daughter-in-law, Juanita Gonzales of Santa Fe, NM; five brothers: Joe Barela and wife Feide, Eddie, Larry, David, and Freddy Barela and wife Dawn all of Santa Fe, NM; three sisters: Marcella Barela and companion Leo, Terry Barela, and Debbie Rosella and husband Ron all of Santa Fe, NM, a sister-in-law, Christine Barela of Santa Fe, NM; 10 grandchildren: Dominic and Brandon Graston, Breeanna Grasgton, Shawntae, Felisha, Maria, Julisa, Adrianna, Paul Matthew, Noah, and Isabella Barela; and one great-granddaughter, Mariah A. Otero.
He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico on April 28, 1945 and was preceded in death by
his wife Mary Helen Barela on April 18, 2006. He was an active member of the Santa Teresita Choir at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and made all kinds of santeros. He enjoyed playing his guitar and messing with his grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. Serving as casket bearers will be Ronnie, Leroy, Arturo, Paul, and David Barela, Shane Graston, Manuel Villanueva, and Ernest Vigil. Cremation will follow and the interment will be on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family has requested memorials be made to the Heating and Air Conditioning Fund at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 403 Valencia Street, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
