Mabel R. Martinez, 89, a resident of Las Vegas who had been residing in Albuquerque for the past three years, passed away at the Presbyterian Hospital Downtown in Albuquerque on Thursday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Louisa McGrath Regensberg; her husband, Alfonso N. Martinez; three sisters, and five brothers.She is survived by her children: Anita Sanchez and husband Manuel of Albuquerque, NM, Julie Lucero and husband Horace of Las Vegas, NM, Esther (Bonnie) Martinez of Albuqerque, Alfonso (Ponchito) Martinez and wife Solie of Albuquerque and Joseph Martinez and wife Lorraine of Peralta, NM; a special niece, Amalia Gabbert of Las Vegas, NM; 11 grandchildren, 16 reat-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.She was born in Guadalupita, NM on December 10, 1918 and received her early education in the Mora Independent School System. She graduated from the Las Vegas High School and attended New Mexico Normal University here in Las Vegas, NM. On February 16, 1939 she was united in marriage to Alfonso N. Martinez at the Immaculate Conception Church here in Las Vegas. That relationship lasted 59 years. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1998. She and her husband operated the Martinez Grand Market on Grand Avenue. A life long catholic, she was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Immaculate Conception Spanish Club. She was an avid bowler and loved to bake and cook. Her specialty was baking German chocolate cakes from scratch. She enjoyed watching sports on television and playing the machines at the casinos. She was the last of nine sisters and brothers.A visitation will be held today from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. All services will be held at the Immaculate Conception Church with at rosary this evening at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Father George V. Salazar will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery.
