Mariano (Marino) A. Garcia, 93, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away on Monday at Alta Vista Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Genoveva Gonzales Garcia; his wife, Eloisa (Elsie) Gutierrez; a brother, Christobal Garcia; and sisters Reyes, Maria, and Vidal.
He is survived by his daughter, Anna Maria Gardner and husband Frank of Lovington, NM; a granddaughter, Raelyn Fugua and husband Dillon of Lovington, NM; a special friend, Lucy Vialpando; cousins, Viola Fisher and husband Clarence of Pueblo, CO, Juanita Aragon of San Leandro, CA, Dolores Gonzales and husband Arturo of Ft. Sumner, NM, and Roberto "Bobby" Garcia of Las Vegas, NM; a nephew Danny Encinias and wife Vivian of Albuquerque, NM and other nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
He was born in Garita, New Mexico on June 12, 1917. He was a very talented roper in his youth and enjoyed story-telling, a good joke, fishing, and playing cards. Marino served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was with Battery D 118 AAA Gun Battalion and served from August 29, 1942 until November 23, 1945. He was honorably discharged as a Tech 5 on November 23, 1945 at Ft. Bliss, TX. He was awarded the American Theater Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern ribbons, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a life member of VFW San Juan Argonne Post #1547 and Chapter 17 of the Disabled American Vetereans.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held from Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. The interment will follow in the San Jose Cemetery
Members of the VFW Post #1547 will provide the military honors for the services.
