A visitation will be held today in St. Francis Chapel of Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. for 85 year old Robert G. Bennett, a retired West Las Vegas educator who passed away on Thursday. Services will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with a rosary this evening at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. The interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley of the family home in Montezuma, NM; one daughter, Roxanne Sanchez and husband Carl of Mesa, AZ; two sons, David Bennett of Montezuma, NM and Eric Bennett and wife Irene of Edgewood, NM; six grandchildren: Karlie and Christian Sanchez of Mesa, AZ, Marc, Michelle, Felicia, and Brandon Bennett all of Albuqerque, NM; two great-grandchildren, David and Audrianna Bennett both of Albuqerque, NM; and his faithful dog companions, Cutie and Angel.He was born in Williamsport, PA on May 7, 1922. On August 26, 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Force where he attained the rank of staff sergeant and was stationed at Camp Luna during the War. He was with the India China Division of the 1346th AAF Battalion and was stationed in Central Burma during World War II. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 13, 1946 at Camp Mc Coy, Wisconsin. He received his BA degree from New Mexico Highlands University, and his Masters degree from the Mexico City College in Mexico City, Mexico. He was united in marriage to Shirley Bresett in Montezuma, NM on December 27, 1946. After his duty to the military he came back to Las Vegas and was the County Health Inspector for San Miguel County. He taught school at the West Las Vegas High School for 29 years teaching mathematics, physics, archaeology, and anthropology. He retired from school teaching in 1981. He was a member of V. F. W. Post #1547, American Legion Post 12 and the National Education Association. He was proud to be a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His hobbies included target shooting, gun collecting and gunsmithing and arrow hunting. Memorials can be sent to the Heating and Air Conditioning Fund at Our Lady of Sorrows Church
