Roy E. "Puffy" Gonzales, 72, a life long resident of Las Vegas, passed away at his home on Tuesday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rafael and Sofia Duran Gonzales; two brothers, Ralph Gonzales Jr. and Frank D. Gonzales; nephews: Steven Gonzales, Joseph Gonzales, Frank Donnie Gonzales, and James Medina; and nieces Elizabeth Medina Allen and Lorraine Segura. He is survived by five brothers: Dan Gonzales and wife Ruby, Tony Gonzales and wife Priscilla, Orlando Gonzales, and Michael Gonzales all of Las Vegas, NM, and Leo J .V. Gonzales and wife Frances of Taos, NM; two sisters, Josephine Medina of Albuquerque, NM and Carmen Segura and husband Leo lf Santa Fe, NM; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born in Las Vegas, NM on November 12, 1938 and was a graduate of West Las Vegas High School. He was honorably discharged from the Army of the United States and was active with the Army Reserve and the New Mexico National Guard and the 720th Transportation Company.. He received his BA and MA degrees from New Mexico Highlands University and was a volunteer member of the E. Romero Hose and Fire Company. He was a music teacher and taught in the West Las Vegas School System for over 30 years and was a member of the New Mexico Music Educators Association and the Northeastern New Mexico Music Educators Association.. He was also a member of B. P. O. Elks Lodge #408. He attended Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Cremation has taken place and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in the family plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
