Rufina C. (Atencio) Martinez

Rufina C. Martinez, 89, a resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away on Thursday evening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victoriano Martinez; a sister, Rebecca Valdez; brothers: Primitivo, Antonio, Juan, and Silviano Atencio; and sisters-in-law Susie Archuleta Atencio and Cordilia Suazo Atencio.
She is survived by four daughters: Genevieve Marquez and husband Dennis of Las Vegas, NM, Theresa Marquez and husband Johnny of Chama, NM, Luisa Killgore and husband Derry of Albuquerque, NM, and Ramona Gutierrez and husband Tommy of Chama, NM; three sons, Steve Martinez and wife Thelma of El Rito, NM, Julian Martinez and wife Lourdes of Chula Vista, CA, and Floyd Martinez and wife Sally of Las Vegas, NM; two brothers: Faustin Atencio and wife Flora of Pueblo, CO and Isaac Atencio and wife Raquel of Salt Lake City, UT; two sisters-in-law, Viola Atencio of Tierra Amarilla, NM and Susana Atencio of Albuquerque, NM; and by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was born on July 10, 1923 in Las Nutrias, NM. She attended schools in Las Nutrias and Tierra Amarilla, NM. Rufina was a homemaker, substitute teacher, taught religion, worked at the senior citizens center in Cebolla and Canjilon, NM and served as a presiding judge for elections in Cebolla, NM. In her younger days, she enjoyed square dancing and as time went on, enjoyed doing many crafts and most of all enjoyed serving her church, along with visiting her
friends and family. For the past 11 years, she lived with her daughter in Las Vegas, NM. Rufina
will be remembered by most for her prayers for others. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8848, and her church in Cebolla, NM.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd., Las Vegas, NM. A rosary will be recited on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas,NM. Cremation will follow and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.from the Santo Nino Church in Cebolla, NM. Father Larry Brito will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in the Las Nutrias Cemetery.
