The Mass of Christian Burial for Sandra Marie Barela, 49, a resident of Las Vegas who passed away on Sunday, was celebrated this morning at 9:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Father C. John Brasher celebrated the Mass. The interment followed in Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery in Sapello, NM with the following serving as casket bearers: Servie Gurule, Robert Serna, Manuel Martinez, Joseph Griego, Brad Herrera, and Raul Martinez. Honorary bearers were Yvonne Hayes, Rosalie Garcia, Irene Turrietta, Emma Martinez, Brenda Esquibel, Marla Armijo, Kathy Ulibarri, and Nathan Duran. A rosary was recited on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Church by Deacon Leroy Martinez. Chuck Griego delivered the eulogy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Toni Barela Herrera; a brother, Danny Barela Jr; and a great-grandmother, Juanita Olivas. She is survived by two sons: Robert "Tono" Vigil and wife Renee of Santa Fe, NM and Nico Barela and Megan of Las Vegas, NM; two sisters: Leona Herrera of Las Vegas, NM and Lisa Garduno and husband Paul of Las Vegas, NM; one brother, Silverio Herera and wife Anna of Las Vegas, NM; a special aunt, Mary Griego of Las Vegas, NM; half-brothers: Chris Barela and fiancé Elsie Gallegos and Mark Barela and Michelle all of Las Vegas, NM; a half-sister, Brenda Esquibel and husband James of Amarillo, TX; four grandchildren: Jarid Vigil, Savannah Sanchez, and Monique Lovato all of Santa Fe, NM and Anthony Vigil of Las Vegas, NM; two nephews: Brad Herrera and wife Erica of Tecolote, NM, Brandon Garduno of Las Vegas, NM; two nieces, Maria Herrera of Las Cruces, NM and Louren Garduno of Las Vegas and many other relatives. She was born in Las Vegas, NM on July30, 1959 to Toni Barela-Herrera and Dan Barela and was raised by Leo Herrera. She worked as a supervisor for Hughes Aircraft in California for several years and returned to Las Vegas where she had a life long career as a certified nursing assistant taking pride in her work and patient care. She worked for a contract nursing agency and traveled and worked in hospitals in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Espanola, and Los Alamos, NM. She loved to do arts and crafts and cook. She had a good sense of humor.
